Deciding if a 2000 watt inverter is right for you
If you are interested in converting DC power from your car, boat or RV to AC power, you will need to choose an inverter to get the job done. The trick is deciding how powerful you need your inverter to be. Will a 300 watt inverter get the job done, or will you need to boost it up to a 1800 watt inverter or a 2000 watt inverter? In order to determine which is right for you - or if you need something in between these two extremes - you need to examine your needs and decide what you need to power with your inverter.
Examining Your Watt Options From 150 Watt Inverters To 3000 Watt Inverters
For the most part, inverters used for road trips fall into four major categories. These include the:

A 300 watt inverter will be sufficient for household appliances such as televisions of up to 27", desktop computers, VCRs, and other mobile office equipment. You might also choose to use a 400 watt inverter to power this equipment. If you need to power a large screen television, however, you will need to jump up to at least a 800 watt inverter, though it might be better for you to get a 1000 watt inverter or even a 1250 watt inverter. Even with 1000 watts, however, you should also be able to power 5-amp power tools and even a bread machine.
If you plan on powering appliances such as microwave ovens, you will need at least an 1800 watt to 2000 watt inverter, though a 2500 watt inverter is even better. With this much wattage, you can also power large power tools, toasters, and hair dryers. Once you get to the 1800 to 2500 watt inverter range, you are looking at inverters designed to be connected directly to the battery network.
If a 2500 watt inverter still isn't enough, you might move up to a 5000 watt inverter. This size inverter can provide you with 5000 watts of ongoing power and is capable of powering nearly any household appliance. You will need to implement some special wiring, however, and you may need to incorporate battery banks as well with an inverter of this size. For some the 2000 watt inverter range may be more practical.
Determining the Right Voltage For 300 Watt Inverters, 2000 Watt Inverters, 5000 Watt Inverters And Everything In Between
In addition to deciding whether you need a 400 watt inverter, a 2000 watt inverter or even a 3000 watt inverter, you are also going to have to decide on the right voltage to suit your needs.
If you are using the inverter with a car, you will probably need a 12 volt inverter. With some vehicles, however, a 24 volt inverter may be necessary. Whether or not you need a 12 volt or a 24 volt inverter depends entirely on the battery you are using. Therefore, you need to check out the specs on your batter in order to determine if you need a 12 volt or 24 volt inverter.
Deciding if you need something as small as a 300 or 400 watt inverter, something midsized like a 2000 watt inverter or something as large as a 5000 watt inverter depends upon your individual needs. So, make an honest assessment of what wattage you will need when you hit the road and choose the inverter that is best suited to you.
